New Layout & Header

Finally, after hours of working on my very first header, I'm pleased enough to use it for my new journal layout. Of course, I made a Grimmjow/Ichigo header because I'm utterly in love with these two Bleach characters, so a Grichi header it had to be. The header is by far not perfect, but for my very first one it is precious to me! :) I like it. This time I wanted to have a lighter layout. I've grown a bit tired of my past darkish one. I also made the fonts a tad bit bigger than in my previous layout. I hope it doesn't look wonky in other browsers! I only have Firefox 2 and it works fine with it.

Today, after months of getting irritating and completely incomprehensible spam comments by anons, I finally disabled commenting for everyone and enabled commenting for registered users only! I really hate doing that, but having to delete more than 15 spam comments per day really got on my nerves. This change will only be temporary though. After 2 weeks I will try enable comments for everyone again. Hopefully all those darn spam anons will have lost interest by then.

Also for all anime fans on my f-list, I found a nice site where you can watch a lot of animes online without the trouble of downloading each episode. The site is called ani-watch. Go, check it out! :)

On a different note, it would be great if you could vote in the SPN newsletter poll, vol.2 if you haven't already. So far, 11 people took the poll! I want to have a few more votes before I analyze the results.

On the same matter, I want to announce that the asylum spn_newsletter was handed over to me by dea_liberty on June 19th, 2008. That will spare me the effort of creating a new asylum! :)

No, although you might have thought it, but I am not dead. I just took a little break from my journal. But now I'm back and I bring you a new little regular issue I've wanted to create for a while now. I want to call it "Seen On My F-List". (Heh, am I not inventive when it comes to names? ^^)

So what will this "Seen On My F-List" issue be about?

Whenever I check my huge f-list on LJ, I notice a whole lot of, in my opinion, interesting stuff, or, more often than not, a great deal of things that simply crack me up! In the past, I always sent only_gremo all those links on MSN, and somehow the idea came to mind to post it all on my journal as well. That's what I want to do from now on!

All right, now that you know what this is all about, let's start with the first issue right away!

Something in Snape's face changes at this piece of information, but Harry can't be bothered to wonder what it is.

"The Dark Lord will not be pleased," Snape murmurs after a moment. "I am certain it was something he did not enjoy."

"Yeah, well, I hope not," Harry spits, "I hope he felt every second of it, every drop of freezing water in my eyes, every blast that nearly knocked me down. I hope he felt every fucking second of it."

Snape is watching him carefully. Harry feels inexplicably close to tears, and it isn't from the pain. It's from the fact that Snape is looking at him with pity - Snape, Snape of all people, Snape the one who should be on the other side of these bars, Snape the Death Eater piece of shite that has been weak, and snivelling, and pitied his whole bloody life. Snape pities him. It's almost too much. He can read the 'I hope so too' in the man's bloody eyes, he can see it there, plain as if Snape had said it out loud.

Snape opens his mouth to speak. Harry cannot bear it.

"Piss off," Harry says quickly, with not nearly enough heat as he would have liked. At first Snape seems rather surprised, but then he rolls his eyes.

"Of course, Mr. Potter. A pleasure, as always." Snape turns to his book, and Harry collapses on his bed. The rest of the night goes by much too slowly, and he does not sleep until morning.

WHY I LIKE THAT FIC:
As you can see, I'm still reading my way through the intriguing fanfics submitted to the Snarry Games 2007.

Night Watch is not as dark a fic as it might seem if you took a glance at the warnings. I think it's more an in-between fic.

The war is won by Voldemort and the Death Eaters who have taken Harry prisoner. But they can't harm him, because every injury Harry has the Dark Lord will have, too. So they keep Harry in a prison cell, and in order to prevent him from doing himself any harm, they have him on constant watch. Snape's job is to watch over him at night.

Their relationship develops slowly, just the way I like it, with Snape discovering more and more his feelings for Harry, which he has difficulties admitting to himself. Nonetheless he feels himself drawn to Harry, as Harry feels himself drawn to Snape. It's beautifully written, well-crafted, entertaining and has, in my opinion, an IC Snape and Harry! I loved the sex scenes. They are so absolutely sexy and hot! And I had to cry in the end. It's a thing that does not happen often and that I don't like that much, but I think, for this fic I have to make an exception! It is a wonderful happy and fitting ending! You will see what I mean, once you've read that fic. Go! Read! :)

WHY I LIKE THAT FIC:
I've been in a mood for well-written Snarry fics lately, and went over to the snarry_games comm on LJ to go through all the stories submitted for the games in 2007. (Strangely, I didn't follow those when they were running.)

The Potter Curse is such a refreshing and amusing fic, I had to laugh out loud the whole time I was reading! It is quite different from the Snarry fics I usually love to read. The Potter Curse is a very humorous fic told from Snape's snarky POV. One remarkable thing about that fic are the funny dialogs! I loved those!

Snape believes he's been cursed with a curse in the final battle which effects begin to show only a few years later. The curse makes him do things he normally wouldn't do. The reader quickly notices what Snape's really "suffering" from, though. And this is what makes the whole story so very funny!

I also loved Slughorn here! Brilliant! I really was rolling on the floor and laughing like mad!

Even though Snape does some things I think are a bit OOC, it does still work for the story. I didn't feel the need to brake it up at all. The Potter Curse is a highly entertaining fic from the beginning right to the end, and if you long for a good laugh or two, I strongly suggest you start reading this fic right now!

[project]: SPN newsletter for IJ, vol.2

A while ago, on February 19th to be exact, I created a poll to gather information on how people feel about a SPN newsletter on IJ. Due to a family bereavement at the beginning of March, I haven't had the energy to work on this project. I apologize for the hiatus!

However, now I'm very much in the mood to get this baby going.

Before we get to the results, I would like to thank everyone who has taken the time and effort to vote in the last poll! &hearts

What did we learn from the last poll?

1.) On the question, whether a newsletter is needed or not, 20 of 20 people (100%) answered with "we so need one".
That makes it a very clear "yes", guys! (Yay!) So there will definitely be a newsletter here on IJ!

2.) Of those 20 people, 19% are willing to collect links. (That would be das_dingsi, bubl, only_gremo and reijamira [me].)
In order to get this to work right, we'll need a few more people who are willing to share links they found. I think the more the better! :)

9% want to become an editor, that would be das_dingsi and reijamira. In the comments, bubl considered to become one too.
Actually, that's great! But I think, in the future, we'll need at least one more editor.

3.) On the question, whether the newsletter should cover SPN content only on IJ or on LJ/JF as well, 47% answered with "yes for IJ/LJ/JF content" and 42% for "only IJ content".
However, in the comments, birggitt mentioned here that "it would be nice to have both IJ and JF links. Not LJ, though, as there is a quite good newsletter, and even if you are only in IJ, you can always RSSD that."

I must say, I can only agree with her comment. The LJ newsletter is very complex and people who are interested in what's going on in SPN fandom on LJ can always read the feed.

What I can gather from the poll result is that people around here wish to have a newsletter that not only covers SPN related content on IJ but also on JF as well.
This needs a few more thoughts, because even though I have a JF account I'm hardly, if any, active over there. That's why we absolutely need more link hunters. :)

Tl;dr:
+ There will be a newsletter on IJ.
+ The newsletter will cover SPN content on IJ and JF.
+ We still need people who provide links, especially on JF (link hunters).
+ We also need one or two more editors.

More thoughts...

Location:
The question where we should post the newsletter was raised in the comments.
yourlibrarian said "the roadhouse could be used for that."

She also suggested to use the roadhouse for a noteboard as a substitute for a newsletter. (In case you are wondering what exactly a noteboard is, like me before, yourlibrarian gives a nice explanation here.)

And last but not least, skuf suggested to "consider contacting the spn_newsletter mods to see if they'd be willing to hand over the comm" which would give us the benefit of already having 109 watchers.

I found this to be a great idea, and I've approached the mods with this idea. Hopefully, they will answer soon.

Newsletter vs. Noteboard
As mentioned before, the question remains whether we want a newsletter like the one on LJ or a noteboard, where people crosspost or link their fanish content, and where we can collect the links for a regular round-up.

Selective vs. All-Inclusive Newsletter
Also mentioned in the comments (here by skuf and here by greenapple) were selective or all-inclusive newsletters. A selective newsletter would only link to the "good" stuff, whereas the all-inclusive one would link to just everything.

I think it's wise to create another poll to determine how people think about those subjects.

Freaking Heat Fucks Up My Laptop --> rant

So yesterday my laptop kinda froze. I was having serious trouble getting it to work again. It was so freaking slow, nothing seemed to work. Opening or closing a program took forever, even chatting on MSN seemed impossible. I was so worried and frustrated, I ~~nearly~~ had a major fit.

It was so bad that I had to shut down my laptop and went to bed at around 12am. (I seldom go to bed at 12am!) And I was pissed that I couldn't work on my laptop any longer. *grrrr*

only_gremo said it was because of the heat. I virus checked my system, and it's clean. So the heat it was then, wasn't it? Seriously, I've never ever had such issues with my laptop before. Scared the hell out of me, because I can't afford a new laptop.

However, today, everything seems to be okay once again. Thank God!

My answers. Beware, some are somewhat lengthy, because I can't keep it short.

1. Friedrich Schiller
Friedrich Schiller (1788–1805), for those who don't know him, was a German poet, philosopher, historian, and dramatist (Read more on wiki). I first learned about him and his works back in school in my German lessons and I was instantly fascinated by him.

This fascination, however, quickly became admiration when I visited Das Schiller Haus ("Schiller's House") in Weimar during a school trip. The place where he'd been living from 1783 to the day he died on May 9, 1805. When I went through his house, the place he'd lived, worked and breathed in, and finally stood before his bed in which he died in agony because he was suffering from tuberculosis, I felt in awe. I admire this man, his works, his friendship with famous Johann Wolfgang von Goethe. And I felt sorry for him that he had to die so young at the age of 45.

2. MUCC
MUCC is a Japanese rock band. I discovered them through last.fm. I really love their style. The music is sometimes heavy and crazy and sometimes slow and melancholic or even both. The lyrics are in Japanese, but what I can gather from the translations very poetical and beautiful. One of my favorite songs is "Kuchiki No Tou" (Watch/Listen.) It's a pretty long song and at the end lead singer Tatsurou screams very desperately. I love that scream so much! There are so many emotions in it! Just amazing!

3. Banana Fish
Banana Fish is a shōjo manga by Akimi Yoshida. The series ran from 1985 to 1994, which makes the drawing style rather old-school like. Some people found the style too old fashioned, which is probably one reason why it was canceled in Germany after only 7 volumes. That day broke my heart a bit because I loved (and still love) this series so very much. It's about a 17 year old gang leader called Ash whose brother dies from a mysterious drug called "Banana Fish". Now he tries everything to reveal the secret about that drug.

Ash is a really interesting character. I have a thing for strong-willed and highly intelligent characters, and Ash is one of them. Despite his terrible past (He was raped when he was only 7, and later on he had to sell his body in order to survive before he got away and founded his own gang. He also lost his brother and father.), he didn't lose it.

I also love his developing friendship with a Japanese guy called Eiji, who visited the States to make a photo report about street gangs. Eiji is completely different from Ash, he's never held a gun in his life, let alone killed someone. He gets stuck in the middle of the battle between Ash and a dangerous mafia leader, and I always found it interesting to see how he adjusted himself to the life Ash led. Besides, the slash/yaoi fan in me always wanted them to get together! :)

4. Unresolved Sexual Tension (UST)
Means everything to me! Okay, not everything perhaps, but a lot! I'm a huge slash fan and therefore love to read a lot of smexy fan fics. I prefer longer, novel length fics over short and smutty fics, because, if they are well-written, well-crafted and well-characterized, I can enjoy the slow development of the relationship between (often male) character A and (male) character B to the full.

Add UST to that slow development between chara A and B and I'm a happy reader. UST means that you can feel the sexual tension between A and B, you know that they want to get into each others pants, they want to kiss each other so badly, they lust for each other, they want to have hot, steamy and passionate sex, but neither of them makes the first move. They dance around the topic like it would burn them if they get too close.

Imagine, during a fight, chara A angrily pushes chara B against a wall, faces only inches apart, they can feel their heavy breath on their skin, feel the body warmth of the other. You as the reader know they want to kiss and shag each other senseless, but there are other issues that prevent exactly that, for instance uncertainty or angst, and after they've been staring into each others eyes for a few moments, they let go of one another. Scenes like that are what make the UST, when it is finally resolved in a smutty scene, so damn sexy.

5. Hurt/Comfort (h/c)
A fan fic genre I love. But, sadly, it is often not well-translated in fics. All those great characters suddenly become out-of-character (OOC), they act like terrible cry babies, little sissies and engage in overly and insufferably sappy talk like "My heart, what have they done to you? or "Where does it hurt, my soul?" etc.

I like h/c so much because, when it is well-written where the characters stay in character (IC) for once, then it's really enjoyable.

H/c follows a simple pattern: chara A gets injured/hurt/sick and chara B has to take care of him.

This doesn't have to be a lethal injury or disease, in fact I like it more when it's just a high fever or when chara A had a near-death-experience, maybe he got shot at and survived with great luck and now has to recover from the injury.

I once wrote an entry about the whole h/c thing here. In this entry I described the aspect that fascinates me most about h/c as follows:

I think if one is confronted with the mortality and vulnerability of the other only then would he show his truest feelings. It's the aspect of recognizing how much the other really means to you, of recognizing how close you came to losing your beloved one which let's us express our deepest and innermost emotions. It's like you lose all your inhibitions at once and all you can do is acting on your raw emotions. And that's what I love about hurt/comfort!

Meaning, for instance, chara B loves chara A and vice versa, but both haven't confessed to each other yet. Now, chara A gets shot at and nearly dies, this is the moment when chara B realizes just how much chara A means to him, that he really came close to lose him forever, and that's when things start to slowly develop towards a sexual relationship. (Add UST and I'm an even happier reader! *lol*)

6. Drarry
Short form for the Harry Potter pairing Draco Malfoy/Harry Potter, for those who aren't familiar with HP fandom. The first fanfic I've ever read was a Drarry fic, which makes me kinda nostalgic. Nowadays I prefer Snarry (Severus Snape/Harry Potter) over Drarry fics, but both pairings have something in common: their hate and animosity towards each other in canon.

I have a huge thing for hate relationships that slowly but steadily develop towards acceptance, respect and later attraction if not love. They don't say "there's a thin line between love and hate" for nothing.

7. Jensen Ackles
Smexy and charming actor first seen in the tv-series Supernatural where he plays the older Winchester brother Dean. I love his voice, his freckles, his humor, those awesome (slashy) moments he has with fellow actor Jared Padalecki ~~just to tease the fangirls~~. Seriously, I like kind, friendly and humerus people. I think Jensen is awesome and a great actor.

Yesterday my friend Anna and I went to our favorite Italian ice cream parlor the "Colosseum". The ice cream there is delicious! Usually I always take one of my 3 favorite sundaes, but yesterday I decided to choose something else entirely from the menu. I picked a "Spezial Becher" (translated to "Special Cup")which was awesome and tasted so very lusciously. My friend took her favorite "Himbeer Joghurt Eisbecher" (translated to "Raspberry Yogurt Sundae") which looked also very yummy. I had to take pictures of the sundaes before we ate them.
